80,000-Year-Old Arrowheads From Uzbekistan May Rewrite Early Human History

Tiny stone points found at the Obi-Rakhmat site in Uzbekistan, dated to 80,000 years ago, appear to be genuine arrowheads, hinting that Homo sapiens carried bow-hunting technology through Central Asia toward Europe.

Researchers have identified tiny, triangular stone points from the Obi-Rakhmat rock shelter in Uzbekistan that they say are genuine arrowheads dating to about 80,000 years ago, according to a study published in the journal PLOS One. Their size closely matches arrowheads made by Homo sapiens some 25,000 years later during an incursion into Neanderthal territory in France's Rhone Valley, offering an argument that could reshape ideas about when and how modern humans first reached Europe.

The Obi-Rakhmat site, discovered in 1962 in the Tien Shan mountains at an altitude of 1,250 meters, preserves a lithic industry of points, large blades and bladelets across a stratigraphic sequence spanning roughly 80,000 to 40,000 years ago. Skull remains of a child found in a layer dated to about 70,000 years show a mix of Neanderthal and anatomically modern features, a combination the researchers say could result from .

An international team identified the tiny projectile points, less than 2 centimeters wide and weighing only a few grams, based on microscopic impact marks compared with experimental reference data. Their small, brittle form makes them unsuitable for mounting on heavy spear shafts; instead, the width of their cutting edges matches arrow shafts documented ethnographically for low-poundage bows.

Because a light projectile shot from a distance depends on speed rather than mass, and human arm strength alone cannot achieve that speed, the researchers say the points required a bow or similar throwing device. The same assemblage also contains much heavier, retouched points, 15 to 20 times the weight and three to four times the thickness of the tiny points, sized like spearheads and bearing their own separate impact marks, showing spear-throwing and bow-hunting technologies existed side by side at the site.

The findings support a 2023 proposal by archaeologist Ludovic Slimak that Central Asia, rather than the Levant, may have been a key route for Homo sapiens moving toward Europe.
