ADHD's 'Wider Spotlight' of Attention May Also Fuel Creativity, Study Suggests

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects millions of people and can make focus, impulse control and sustained attention more difficult in everyday tasks. Yet traits associated with the condition are also found among highly successful artists and innovators, the study notes, naming Justin Timberlake and Simone Biles as examples. New research by neuroscientist Dr. Radwa Khalil of Constructor University, co-authored with researchers from several French institutions and published in the journal iScience, examines the neurological overlap between attention and creativity.

The study, titled 'Attention Unleashed: creative therapy for thoughtful transformation,' suggests that some mental processes linked to ADHD, including what the researchers call , may also support creative thinking when directed in productive ways. The findings point to the possibility that creative activities such as art, music and dance could eventually serve as non-pharmacological interventions for the nearly 8% of children worldwide affected by ADHD.

Khalil described the idea using the image of a spotlight: most people can focus their attention narrowly on one thing, but ADHD brains take in more information at once with a wider attentional spotlight, which can make tasks that demand narrow focus harder, while also encouraging exploratory thinking and new combinations of ideas that fuel creativity. The researchers point to , in which ideas move in unexpected directions, as one example of this overlap: it can contribute to creative insight, but similar patterns are also associated with distractibility and mind-wandering common in ADHD.

Creative activities including art, music, dance, writing and gaming may give people with ADHD structured ways to direct and explore defocused attention, and could help strengthen neural networks involved in controlling attention, the researchers suggest. They caution that scientists still do not fully understand the relationship between creativity and attention, and the study proposes a framework for future research, including greater interdisciplinary collaboration and longitudinal studies that track changes over time.
