Broadening Autism Spectrum Raises Concerns, Says Leading Scientist
Dame Uta Frith warns that the expanding autism spectrum may obscure important differences, potentially leading to misdiagnosis.

Dame Uta Frith, a prominent autism researcher, has raised concerns about the broadening definition of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In an editorial published in Psychological Medicine, she argues that the current diagnostic criteria may group together individuals with vastly different developmental profiles and needs, potentially leading to confusion and misdiagnosis.
Historically, autism was defined narrowly, focusing on severe social, communication, and behavioral difficulties. However, the definition has expanded over the decades to include individuals with milder traits and no language or learning issues. This expansion has contributed to a significant rise in autism diagnoses, from 4 in 10,000 children in the 1960s to about 1 in 57 children today.
Dame Uta highlights several factors contributing to this increase, including greater public awareness, reduced stigma, and wider interpretations of diagnostic criteria. She also notes the influence of online communities and self-diagnosis in shaping perceptions of autism.
A key issue is the difference between those diagnosed in early childhood, who often show noticeable developmental differences, and those diagnosed later in life, who may have average or high intelligence but experience social difficulties or mental health challenges. Dame Uta suggests that these groups might represent distinct conditions or developmental pathways.
The lack of a definitive biological test for autism complicates diagnosis, which relies on developmental history, observed behavior, and clinical judgment. Dame Uta warns that an overly broad spectrum could lead to overdiagnosis, affecting treatment and support for individuals.
