China Postpones Chang'e-7 Moon Mission After Rocket Was Already on the Pad

China has delayed the launch of its Chang'e-7 lunar mission even though the Long March 5 rocket was already staged at the Wenchang launch site. No technical reason has been given.

China has postponed the launch of its Chang'e-7 lunar mission, missing the launch window that opened on August 24, 2026. The China National Space Administration (CNSA) and the China Manned Space Engineering Office announced the delay in a brief statement, even though the Long March 5 rocket carrying the spacecraft had already been moved onto the launch pad at the Wenchang Space Launch Site on Hainan Island.

The agencies gave no technical reason for the delay, citing only the "principles of prudence, reliability, and absolute mission success." Chang'e-7 is designed to head for the Moon's south pole and consists of three parts: an orbiter that will make high-resolution topographic maps, a lander-and-rover pair built to touch down near Shackleton crater, and a "" designed to make powered leaps across crater floors in search of water ice and other volatile substances.

The mission is a direct precursor to the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), a long-term Chinese plan for a permanent robotic and eventually crewed outpost on the Moon. Chang'e-7 was meant to gather ground-truth data on how accessible and easy to process the Moon's polar water ice actually is, information engineers need before deciding what infrastructure the station will require.

A separate, parallel Chinese program aims for a crewed lunar landing by 2030, using the Long March 10 rocket and the Mengzhou crew vehicle, both still undergoing ground testing. Data on thermal conditions and lunar (the loose layer of dust, soil and broken rock on the Moon's surface) from Chang'e-7 feeds directly into the final design of those systems, so the delay pushes back that timeline too.

China's earlier Chang'e missions have mostly succeeded, ranging from a simple lunar orbiter to Chang'e-6, which achieved the first-ever sample return by a robotic spacecraft from the Moon's far side. The next viable launch window for Chang'e-7 is expected no earlier than next year.
