China's Space-Based Computing Cloud Starts Regular In-Orbit Services

A satellite computing network built by Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications has begun regular in-orbit services, processing data directly on satellites instead of only on the ground.

A China-built cloud has begun offering regular in-orbit experimental services, according to its developer, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT). The orbital computing facility automates operations across satellites, space-based servers, ground stations and data centers, giving users worldwide a full service from submitting a computing task to receiving its results.

The system is an example of "space computing" β€” an approach that puts data processing, storage, intelligent analysis and decision-making capabilities directly on orbital platforms such as satellites and space stations, rather than only on the ground. It runs on the , which BUPT launched in 2021 and describes as the world's first space computing satellite constellation. The constellation has deployed 16 low-Earth-orbit satellites and seven ground stations, and has supported more than 60 institutions in orbital tests, drawing researchers from more than 50 countries and regions.

Since entering service, the platform has supported tasks including in-orbit big-data computing and 6G communications, with more than 100 users accessing what BUPT calls an energy-efficient service. Its key capabilities include reusable platform-based services, long-term reliable operation of onboard software, and a foundation for real-time in-orbit processing of space data and autonomous satellite decision-making.

Speaking at the 2026 Space Computing Industry Conference in Beijing in April, Yu Guobin, deputy director of the commercial space department at the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, said space-based computing offers a zero-carbon, sustainable and widely accessible alternative to ground-based data centers, which he said are constrained by high energy consumption, limited land, high cooling costs and limited coverage. He said it could offer real-time, intelligent services to emergency response, marine observation, aviation and shipping, and polar expeditions.

BUPT said the platform's value lies in helping the space information industry move from delivering hardware to delivering persistent services, and in supporting new industrial growth areas including satellite internet, 6G, commercial space and emergency communications β€” fields China has named among the key emerging industries it aims to foster over the next five years.
