New Cliff Elevator Transforms School Commute in Remote Chinese Village

A new 288-meter cliff elevator in Yunnan, China, has drastically reduced the school commute for children in a remote village, cutting travel time from six hours to about 30 minutes.

A new cliff elevator has been inaugurated in a remote village in Yunnan province, China, significantly reducing the travel time for schoolchildren. The 288-meter (945-foot) "Fuyao Ladder" elevator, alongside the 2022-built "Qingyun Ladder," has cut the commute from a six-hour round trip to just about 30 minutes.

Previously, children from Nizhuhe Village had to navigate dangerous cliffside trails to reach Guanzhai Primary School, located at the top of a mountain. The village sits at an elevation of 1,100 meters (3,610 feet), while the school is at 1,650 meters (5,413 feet). The new elevator system, referred to as the "aerial school bus," allows students to reach a platform near the mountain's summit in minutes.

The "Fuyao Ladder" features a fully transparent 360° glass curtain wall, offering a scenic view during the ascent. It operates at a speed of 5 meters per second and, together with the "Qingyun Ladder," can transport up to 1,200 people per hour. This has also increased the area's visitor capacity from 4,000 to 15,000 people daily.

After reaching the elevator's top platform, students take an aerial cable car for an additional five-minute ride to school. This infrastructure not only ensures that students arrive on time but also significantly enhances their safety by eliminating the need for perilous climbs.

The development of these elevators highlights China's engineering prowess and commitment to improving access to education in remote areas. The project was designed to facilitate easier access for a small number of students, showcasing a remarkable dedication to educational accessibility.
