FDA Approves Rasonque, First Drug to Target a Genetic Cause of Pancreatic Cancer

Rasonque nearly doubled median survival in a clinical trial for advanced pancreatic cancer and is the first approved drug to attack a genetic driver of the disease.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Rasonque, a new treatment for advanced pancreatic cancer made by the biotech company Revolution Medicines. Rasonque, whose chemical name is daraxonrasib, is the first drug approved to attack a genetic cause of the disease, one of the most aggressive and lethal cancers.

The approval was based on a clinical trial that read out earlier this year. Patients with advanced pancreatic cancer who received Rasonque as a had a of 13.2 months, compared with 6.7 months for patients given standard chemotherapy.

Andrew Ko, a medical oncologist specialising in gastrointestinal cancers at the University of California, San Francisco, called the approval the biggest development in pancreatic cancer treatment in decades. "It will be transformative in the way we treat pancreas cancer," he said, adding that he was thankful for the advance on behalf of his patients.
