Finnish Study Links Screen Time to Improved Cognitive Processing in Adolescents
A Finnish study suggests that increased screen time during childhood may enhance cognitive processing in adolescence, highlighting the importance of balanced screen use.

A recent study from Finland has revealed a surprising link between screen time and cognitive performance in adolescents. Conducted over eight years, the research found that children who spent more time on screens tended to have better cognitive processing during their teenage years.
The study, part of the PANIC project, involved 124 girls and 136 boys, with an average age of 15.8 years. Researchers assessed physical activity and sedentary behavior using surveys and devices that tracked heart rate and movement. Cognitive abilities were evaluated using the CogState test battery.
Doctoral Researcher Petri Jalanko from the University of Jyväskylä emphasized that the type of screen activity is crucial. Activities that involve learning, creativity, and problem-solving may support cognitive development. Jalanko advises against viewing screen time as entirely harmful and suggests balancing it with physical activity that promotes active thinking.
The research also explored the relationship between physical activity and cognition, finding different patterns for boys and girls. For girls, light physical activity was linked to better working memory, while for boys, guided physical activity showed similar benefits. Interestingly, lower levels of unsupervised physical activity were associated with better cognitive processing.
The findings, published in Pediatric Exercise Science, indicate associations rather than causation, and the researchers call for more studies to explore these relationships further. They highlight the complexity of how physical activity and screen time interact with cognitive development.
