Honey Bees Can Serve as Early-Warning Sentinels for Environmental Health, Review Finds
A new review argues that honey bees, already valued as pollinators, can also act as biological sentinels whose health reflects pesticide exposure and other environmental pressures.

Honey bees are widely known as essential pollinators, but a new review argues they can also serve as biological sentinels of environmental health. Because bees continuously collect nectar, pollen and water from their surroundings, they are exposed to contaminants present in agricultural and natural ecosystems, and their health can offer clues about environmental pressures affecting biodiversity and ecosystem function.
The review, published in the journal Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology by researchers working with the Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO) alongside Temple University, the University Magna Graecia of Catanzaro, the University of Siena and Italy's Local Health Authority of Foggia, examines how pesticide exposure β particularly combined with nutritional, biological and environmental stressors β can affect bee physiology, behavior, immunity, reproduction and gut microbiota, potentially undermining the resilience of entire colonies.
"Honey bees can be considered biological sentinels of the environment because their health reflects the complex interaction between chemical exposure, nutrition, pathogens and ecological conditions," said Antonio Giordano, founder and director of SHRO and a professor at Temple University. "Their protection is therefore not simply a matter of safeguarding a single species. It means protecting the ecological systems that sustain agriculture, biodiversity and, ultimately, human health."
The review stresses that environmental toxicity should not be judged by mortality alone: sublethal pesticide exposure can alter bee behavior, navigation, immune response, reproduction and gut microbiota, and interactions between pesticides and biological stressors may amplify these effects. "Bees can become an important early-warning system for environmental changes, helping us identify biological effects before they translate into broader ecological and food-system consequences," said Giovanna Liguori, executive director of SHRO's Group.
The authors conclude that protecting bees requires moving from assessing single contaminants toward an integrated view of environmental stressors and colony resilience, through measures such as sustainable agricultural practices, integrated pest management, protection of floral resources and support for bee nutrition and immune health.
