Scientists Propose a Major Rewrite of the Human Family Tree, Folding More Species into Homo
A Monash University researcher argues that fossil discoveries have blurred the lines between our ancestors, and proposes placing Australopithecus and Paranthropus within the genus Homo.
New research from Monash University argues that recent discoveries in human evolution are straining the system scientists use to name and classify our ancestors. Published in the American Journal of Biological Anthropology, the paper calls for a major reconsideration of human taxonomy, the science of naming and grouping organisms. It proposes placing all human species and their close fossil relatives from the past four to five million years within a single genus, Homo.
Human evolution is often drawn as a tidy sequence, from ape-like ancestors through Australopithecus and early Homo to Homo sapiens today. But the fossil record is far messier. As new fossils turn up, many of the features once used to separate humans from their close relatives have become harder to define. Lead researcher Dr Ian Towle, a research fellow at the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, says the existing scheme, covering Homo along with Australopithecus and Paranthropus, is becoming less useful and less accurate.
Traditionally, members of Homo were identified by traits such as large brains and advanced tool use. Those markers have blurred: some members of Homo had very small brains, while evidence suggests Paranthropus and Australopithecus were also capable of complex behaviours. Towle notes these groups do not necessarily form distinct evolutionary branches, or clades, and the behavioural and ecological differences once used to tell them apart have become increasingly difficult to maintain.
Over the past 50 years, taxonomy has increasingly tried to reflect genuine evolutionary groups, clades that contain a common ancestor and all its descendants, but human classification has been slower to follow. Towle argues that expanding Homo to include Australopithecus and Paranthropus would give a more consistent picture and reduce the need to keep redefining groups every time a new fossil is found.
