Road Dust Behind Nearly a Third of Hyderabad's PM10 Pollution, TGPCB-IIT Study Finds
A study by the Telangana State Pollution Control Board and IIT Hyderabad found that road dust contributes about 32% of PM10 and 26% of PM2.5 pollution in the city, with silt on roads far above recommended levels.
Road dust contributes about 32% of PM10 pollution and 26% of PM2.5 pollution in Hyderabad, according to a study by the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TGPCB) and IIT Hyderabad. The study found that on city roads ranges from 5 to 15 grams per square meter, well above the recommended level of less than 3 grams per square meter.
The findings led to a follow-up study on the silt-removal efficiency of mechanical road sweepers, aimed at reducing road dust and improving air quality. Results from that study were presented at a workshop titled "Improving the efficiency of the mechanical road sweepers to mitigate the road dust and to improve the air quality."
The workshop was attended by IIT Hyderabad's Prof. Qureshi, Telangana State Pollution Control Board's CEE B. Raghu, NCAP Nodal Officer Dr. D. Prasad, ES Jayasri, GHMC Additional Commissioner Ravi Kiran, Raghu Prasad of MMC and Venugopal Reddy of CMC.
