Florida State University researchers have uncovered two distinct migration strategies among male green sea turtles off the coast of Brazil. The study, published in Marine Ecology Progress Series, reveals that while some turtles travel up to 1,000 kilometers after breeding, others remain in the same area year-round.

The research team, led by Armando Barsante Santos and Mariana Fuentes, tracked adult male green sea turtles during three breeding seasons from 2019 to 2022. They found that approximately 80% of the tagged turtles migrated between 300 to 1,000 kilometers to different foraging grounds, while 20% stayed in the breeding area throughout the year.

This study is significant because male green sea turtles are harder to study than females, who regularly return to nesting beaches. The findings provide crucial information on the turtles' movement patterns, which can aid conservation efforts by identifying important migratory and feeding areas.

The researchers also collected data on the turtles' diving behavior. Turtles that stayed in the breeding area made frequent, short daytime dives and longer nighttime dives. In contrast, migrating turtles exhibited varied diving patterns, likely to avoid predators and conserve energy during their long journeys.

Understanding these migration strategies is essential for conservation management, especially in light of global warming, which affects the sex ratio of hatchlings. The study highlights the importance of protecting key habitats and ensuring the resilience of turtle populations.
