Miami's Urban Trees: A Natural Solution to Extreme Heat
Researchers at Florida International University highlight the cooling benefits of large tree canopies in Miami, emphasizing their role as critical urban infrastructure.
As Miami swelters under one of its longest streaks of 90-plus-degree days, researchers from Florida International University (FIU) have been studying the cooling effects of urban trees. Led by biologist Christopher Baraloto, the team has found that large tree canopies can reduce urban temperatures by up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, making them a crucial component of urban infrastructure.
The research, conducted by FIU's Institute of Environment, involved monitoring temperatures, analyzing over 9,000 urban trees, and surveying 600 residents. The findings suggest that not all trees are equal in their cooling capacity. Large, dense canopies, such as those of native fig trees, provide more cooling than palm trees or ornamental species like the royal poinciana.
Madison Kinder, an urban ecology fellow, is exploring how trees can also reduce UV exposure in communities. The study emphasizes the importance of protecting mature trees and selecting species that can develop substantial crowns to maximize ecological benefits.
According to Paulo Olivas, assistant professor of Earth and Environment, the benefits of trees depend on various factors, including species, size, and location. Miami-Dade County currently has about 20% tree canopy coverage, below the 30% target set by county officials.
Baraloto, who is part of the City of Miami's Tree Ordinance Advisory Committee, advocates for policies that balance urban development with tree preservation. He stresses the need for smarter species selection and targeted investment in neighborhoods that require more shade.
