NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center on August 30, 2026. The telescope separated from the rocket shortly after liftoff, deployed its solar panels and lower instrument sunshade, and is now travelling toward , a stable location nearly one million miles from Earth. NASA Goddard ground controllers confirmed that all of Roman's systems were functioning normally.
Roman's defining feature is its field of view, which NASA says is at least 100 times wider than that of the Hubble Space Telescope. This will let it scan much larger stretches of sky far faster than earlier instruments. Through its surveys, the telescope is expected to help identify more than 100,000 new exoplanets while also mapping billions of galaxies, data astronomers will use to study and , two of the biggest unsolved mysteries in astrophysics.
The telescope also carries a instrument, which blocks the light of a distant star so that planets orbiting it can be examined in far greater detail, including their atmospheres. NASA officials called the coronagraph technology a major advancement, saying it will let researchers begin resolving the atmospheres of distant worlds and assess whether any could be habitable.
Roman will spend approximately 90 days undergoing preparation before beginning full science operations, with its first images expected before the end of the year.
