NASA Extends Voyager 2's Mission with Innovative Power-Saving Strategy

NASA engineers have developed a method to extend Voyager 2's mission by conserving power, allowing it to continue scientific operations for at least another year.

NASA has devised an innovative approach to extend the operational life of the Voyager 2 spacecraft, which has been exploring space for nearly 50 years. Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory have implemented a power-saving strategy that will enable the spacecraft to continue its scientific mission for at least another year.

Voyager 2, along with its twin Voyager 1, relies on radioisotope thermoelectric generators. These generators convert heat from decaying plutonium into electricity. However, as the plutonium decays, the power output decreases by about 4 watts each year, necessitating the shutdown of non-essential systems to conserve energy.

The recent effort, dubbed the 'Big Bang,' involved shutting down certain powered devices and replacing them with alternatives that consume less electricity. This power-saving measure is crucial as it ensures that Voyager 2 remains warm enough for its systems to function, thereby extending the life of its three remaining scientific instruments.

Since 2024, the diminishing power supply has forced NASA to deactivate two of the ten scientific instruments on each Voyager spacecraft. Without the 'Big Bang' initiative, another instrument on Voyager 2 would have been shut down by the end of 2026. The success of this strategy means that the remaining instruments can continue to collect data for an additional year.

NASA plans to apply the same power-saving technique to Voyager 1, which is even farther from Earth than Voyager 2. Engineers aim to implement this strategy in the coming months to ensure the continuation of its scientific mission.
