Polaris has announced a new development in its 2027 Xpedition utility vehicle (UTV) with the introduction of a pneumatic-enhanced continuously variable transmission (CVT). This new system aims to reduce noise and improve fuel efficiency by incorporating pneumatics into the existing mechanical CVT design.

The traditional CVT in Polaris vehicles uses a drive clutch and a driven clutch connected by a belt. As engine speed increases, centrifugal force causes the drive clutch to close, shifting the belt outward and changing the gear ratio for more speed. The new pneumatic system adds an air compressor, a small air tank, and a pneumatic piston to this setup, allowing the drive clutch to be artificially compressed with air. This reduces engine rpm, leading to quieter operation and better fuel economy, especially during low-effort cruising.

Users can control the pneumatic system through three settings: Comfort, Standard, and Sport. In Comfort mode, the system prioritizes lower rpm to minimize noise, reducing sound levels by about 9 decibels at 35 mph, a 40% reduction compared to the standard CVT. The Sport mode focuses on speed and power, while Standard balances the two.

The air compressor not only aids in quieter CVT operation but also provides practical benefits such as inflating tires. The compressor, located in the left-rear fender, can inflate one tire from nearly empty or all four from off-road conditions to fully inflated. This feature adds convenience for off-road enthusiasts.

This innovation reflects the evolution of side-by-side vehicles from basic designs to sophisticated machines. By enhancing the existing CVT with pneumatics, Polaris has improved the off-road experience without overhauling the entire system.
