Saab Unveils Full-Scale Mock-Up of Supersonic Autonomous Combat Aircraft Concept

Swedish aerospace company Saab has unveiled a full-scale mock-up of its A3-001, a supersonic autonomous aircraft concept, at the Swedish Armed Forces Jubilee Air Show at Malmen Air Base in Linkoping. Saab has released only limited technical details, but says the eventual prototype would be roughly the size of a modern single-engine fighter jet and powered by a General Electric F414 turbofan engine capable of supersonic speed.

The A3-001's tailless, blended-wing design uses cropped compound-delta swept wings and a pronounced chine, along with side air intakes, serrated engine exhaust nozzles and an internal weapons bay, all intended to reduce its radar and infrared signature. Saab says the aircraft is designed to operate as a "teammate" alongside piloted fighters and airborne early-warning aircraft, with room in its internal bay for precision-guided munitions and air-to-air missiles, plus integrated sensor systems.

Saab has put the A3-001 project on an accelerated development schedule running from August 2026. An A1 prototype is planned to make its first flight in 2027 to test basic flight characteristics and aerodynamic performance, followed by an A2 demonstrator with upgraded performance and actual weapons by 2030, and eventually an A3 production-representative prototype early in the next decade if approved.

"We are currently in an intensive development phase where, together with Sweden, we are exploring technologies that will lay the foundation for the next generation of combat air systems," said Peter Nilsson, head of Saab's Advanced Programs business unit, adding that the company intends to fly uncrewed demonstrators with fighter-like characteristics before 2030.
