Saltwater Flooding Could Reshape Which Crops Pay Off on UK Farms, Study Finds
A study of Greater Lincolnshire finds that rising soil salinity cuts profits for every major crop, though winter wheat holds up better than potatoes, beet and oilseed.

Rising sea levels and more frequent flooding are pushing salt onto some of the UK's best farmland, according to a new study focused on Greater Lincolnshire, one of the country's most productive agricultural areas. The research, led by Saul Ngarava and published in the journal Land Use Policy, looked at the problem from farmers' financial perspective rather than just crop yields.
The researchers combined maps of crops, land quality and flood risk with farm-level financial data, then simulated what happens as rises. Every major crop loses money as salt levels increase, the study found. Potatoes take the biggest hit because they are expensive to grow, so falling yields quickly wipe out profits; beet and oilseed also see large declines, and even more resilient cereals are not spared.
Salinity does more than reduce profits across the board β it flattens the usual hierarchy of high-return and safer, lower-return crops, leaving most options clustered together with lower returns and higher risk. One crop stood out as the most reliable as conditions worsen: winter wheat, which still loses money but holds up better than the rest.
The areas most exposed to saltwater flooding, especially the low-lying Fenlands, are also some of the UK's most productive farmland, so the pressure is not confined to marginal land. Salt can also linger in soil for years after floodwater drains, making it a slow-moving problem that could push more land toward a narrower range of salt-tolerant crops over time.
In the short term, researchers say adaptation is likely to mean shifting to more resilient crops such as barley, which is already relatively salt-tolerant. In the longer term, halophytes β salt-tolerant edible plants such as samphire β could be scaled up from niche, high-value foods into more mainstream crops, though that would require new investment and markets.
