Russian Researchers Complete Preclinical Trials for Cell Therapy That Regrows Damaged Nasal Tissue

Researchers at Sechenov University in Russia have completed the preclinical phase of trials for a cell therapy product called SechenovRhino, designed to restore nasal tissue damaged down to the mucosa, cartilage and bone. The experiments confirmed the therapy triggers tissue regeneration and prevents excessive scarring, and clinicians plan to perform the first operations using it no later than early 2027.

Traditional surgical techniques can mostly close a defect or replace a lost area, but they often cannot restore the delicate architecture of the nasal mucosa and surrounding tissue, leading to persistent scarring and a high risk of the problem recurring. 'For such patients, the problem is not simply a hole or a lack of tissue. We need to restore an extremely complex system: the mucosa, capillary network, cartilage and bone framework, everything responsible for proper airflow and air purification,' said Alexander Maltsev, an assistant at Sechenov University's Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases. 'That is why the preclinical results are crucial for us: after applying our product, the tissues were as close as possible to healthy tissue in key morphological parameters.'

The method is based on spheroids, three-dimensional structures assembled from stem cells extracted from a small fragment of the patient's own fat tissue, which are delivered directly to the affected area. Once at the site of injury, the cells release a complex of active molecules that control inflammation and activate the body's natural regenerative reserves.
