Thunder Turns Buried Internet Cable Into a Way of X-Raying the Ground
Researchers listened to 458 thunderquakes through an old telecom fibre and reconstructed the ground to about 100 metres deep, without drilling a hole.
When lightning strikes it superheats the air and sends out a shock wave heard as thunder. Some of that energy reaches the ground and converts into seismic waves, and the vibrations that result are known as thunderquakes. Until now they were not understood well enough to be useful.
A research team has shown the signals can be used to map what lies beneath the surface β groundwater movement, contamination, sinkholes, or the ground under a proposed building β much as an X-ray images the inside of a body. Their listening device was an ordinary fibre-optic cable of the kind that carries internet and phone traffic.
Using distributed acoustic sensing, the team turned that cable into a line of vibration sensors. An instrument called an interrogator pulses laser light along the fibre and measures the tiny changes vibrations cause. The cable, part of the Penn State FORESEE project, runs more than 4 kilometres and yielded over 2,100 sensors spaced a few feet apart. Over two years the old telecom fibre recorded 458 clear thunderquakes.
That detail exposed a wave type that had been hard to observe: air-coupled Rayleigh waves, measurable at the surface but shaped by material far below. The technique relies on seismic dispersion, where waves of different frequencies travel at different depths. By measuring how wave speed changed with frequency, the team reconstructed the ground's properties down to roughly 100 metres.
Imaging the subsurface normally needs truck-mounted vibration sources or sensor arrays installed for a survey, which is costly over large areas. Thunderstorms supply seismic energy free and across the landscape, and fibre-optic cable is already buried under cities and towns.
