Why the Summer Triangle Still Rules September and November Night Skies

Vega, Altair and Deneb still dominate the overhead sky well into autumn. The answer to why it keeps its summer name lies in how the pattern crosses the sky through the night.

On clear September evenings, Vega, Altair and Deneb β€” the three bright stars of the Summer Triangle β€” command the overhead sky just after dusk, as though the season lingers above. Even as late as mid-November, the Triangle remains nearly overhead soon after sunset. That raises a question: if this landmark stays so prominent well into autumn, why is it still called the Summer Triangle rather than the Autumn Triangle?

The answer lies not in the calendar but in how the Triangle moves across the sky over the course of a night. In autumn, it does not stay visible all night β€” by dawn it has dropped below the west-northwest horizon. In summer, by contrast, it remains visible from dusk until dawn: already evident in the east-northeast at nightfall, near overhead around the middle of the night, and descending in the west-northwest as daybreak approaches.

The three stars also lie at very unequal distances, so their apparent brightness can be misleading about how luminous they truly are. Altair, the closest, is 16.7 light-years away, followed by Vega at 25 light-years. Deneb is far more distant, at roughly 1,600 light-years, though various sources place it between 1,400 and 2,600 light-years. Even so, Deneb still shines at +1.3 because it is a at least 55,000 times brighter than the sun, while Vega and Altair, only a few dozen light-years away, are comparatively faint.

Who first named the pattern the Summer Triangle is debated. British astronomer Sir Patrick Moore said he introduced the nickname during a 1958 BBC television broadcast, though H.A. Rey called the three stars a 'right triangle' in his 1952 sky guide and used the Summer Triangle name itself in his 1954 children's book Find the Constellations. Others trace the term to U.S. navigator training manuals from World War II, while astronomer Oswald Thomas called the pattern the 'Grosses Dreieck,' or 'Great Triangle,' in the late 1920s.
