DRDO Advances Indigenous Border Surveillance and Counter-Drone Technology
India's Defence Research and Development Organisation is building a layered network of homegrown sensors, radar and counter-drone systems, aiming to make core border-security technology fully indigenous.

India is developing a network of homegrown technologies aimed at strengthening surveillance and security along its borders, led by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Dr. B.K. Das, Director General of Electronics and Communication Systems at DRDO, said in a recent interview that relying on physical infrastructure such as fences is no longer enough, and that the future of border security lies in electronic systems.
DRDO is developing a range of detection technologies, including fibre-optic sensors, high-resolution and infrared cameras, and hyperspectral and multispectral imaging tools. For round-the-clock monitoring in all weather conditions, these are being backed by advanced radar networks and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, linked through a secure communication infrastructure so that a detected threat can be relayed quickly across the network.
To counter drones used for smuggling, reconnaissance or attacks, DRDO has already developed its first generation of counter-drone technology, including the D4 Anti-Drone System, which has been transferred to Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for mass production and deployed in sensitive areas. These systems combine radar, electro-optical sensors and radio frequency detectors to spot and identify drones, and can respond either by disrupting a drone's electronics and jamming its communication and GPS signals, or, using directed-energy weapons such as high-powered lasers, by physically destroying it; India has also developed laser systems of varying power levels and is researching high-power microwaves for the same purpose.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are central to managing this network of sensors and weapons, helping to quickly determine whether a detected object is a friend or foe and supporting faster decision-making as radar analysis improves. Dr. Das said the goal is for core technologies -- such as radar chips, detection algorithms and optical sensors -- to become fully over time, reducing India's dependence on imported systems.
