A recent study published in the open-access journal BMJ Public Health has identified a concerning link between , a common food preservative, and a rise in suicide deaths in the UK. The research highlights that young people, particularly males, are disproportionately affected.

The study conducted a retrospective analysis of cases from 2019 to 2024, using data from the UK's primary laboratory for postmortem testing of nitrite and nitrate. Researchers found that 71% of the cases involved younger generations, with men accounting for the majority of these cases. Blood tests revealed nitrite and nitrate levels 100 times higher than normal in 87% of cases, suggesting intentional ingestion.

The researchers caution that the actual number of deaths may be higher due to limitations in testing and reporting. They also emphasize the role of online information in spreading harmful knowledge about sodium nitrite, which is easily accessible to digitally literate young people.

The study calls for urgent action to regulate access to sodium nitrite and curb the dissemination of harmful online information. Researchers suggest that emergency services could carry antidotes to mitigate the effects of sodium nitrite poisoning. Lead researcher Professor Amrita Ahluwalia stresses the need for immediate steps to address this public health issue.
