New research from the University of Iowa gives a more detailed look at how the frontoparietal cortex — a brain network that gathers signals from across the brain, filters out what matters, and helps coordinate a response — operates when people face uncertainty while making decisions. The findings, led by associate professor Kai Hwang of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, suggest the network does not communicate with the rest of the brain in a fixed way.

In earlier work published in 2025, Hwang's team found that the frontoparietal cortex builds an ongoing, high-level summary of information — including signals that are incomplete or uncertain — arriving from other brain regions, then helps direct those regions toward an appropriate response. The new study examined how adaptable those connections are as the demands of a decision change.

Researchers recruited 38 participants aged 18 to 35, who learned to associate combinations of colors, faces and scenes with specific button-press responses. The team then altered the learned pairings, forcing participants to recognize the change, relearn the correct response, and cope with the resulting uncertainty. Combining behavioral data with functional MRI scans, the researchers built a computational model that separated signals from different brain regions and traced how the frontoparietal cortex integrated them.

"Rather than simply becoming more active during difficult tasks, we observed how this network dynamically changes how it communicates with other brain regions depending on what information is needed at each stage of a decision," Hwang said. The team suggests the results could guide future research into conditions such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and schizophrenia, in which this information exchange may function differently.
