The Einstein Probe satellite has detected a rare X-ray flash, designated EP250827b, which has been linked to a supernova named SN 2025wkm. This discovery, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, provides insights into the formation of ultra-dense, rapidly spinning neutron stars known as magnetars.
Extragalactic fast X-ray transients (EFXTs) are brief, intense bursts of X-rays whose origins are not well understood. The Einstein Probe, designed to detect faint X-ray signals, has been crucial in identifying these events. EP250827b was initially a faint detection, confirmed only after the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) observed a corresponding optical transient, or supernova, just 5.5 hours later.
The supernova SN 2025wkm showed no hydrogen or helium, and its debris moved at extremely high speeds, classifying it as a Type Ic-BL supernova. Unlike typical supernovae, SN 2025wkm's light curve displayed an unusual plateau in brightness, suggesting an additional energy source beyond radioactive decay. Researchers propose this is due to a newborn magnetar, with a magnetic field about a quadrillion times stronger than Earth's and spinning every 1.9 milliseconds.
The Einstein Probe's detection of EP250827b marks the fourth instance of an X-ray flash linked to a supernova. This event provides valuable data on supernova explosion mechanisms and the formation of magnetars, enhancing our understanding of these cosmic phenomena.
